Strata Clean Energy was founded in 2008 by Markus and Cathy Wilhelm with a simple idea: build better energy and stand behind it for the long term. We began with small commercial and industrial projects and quickly moved into utility scale solar, completing our first 5 megawatt plant in North Carolina in 2011 and scaling to a 50 megawatt project just a year later. Within eight years, Strata had surpassed 1 gigawatt of installed solar capacity and cemented a leading position in our home market.
As the industry evolved, so did Strata’s platform. We expanded beyond North Carolina, delivering larger, more complex projects and building a fully integrated in-house team.
In 2018, we launched our battery energy storage division, becoming an early mover in large scale BESS. Since then, we have developed nearly 5 gigawatt hours of storage projects and helped bring online one of the largest storage facilities in the world.
Today, we have commercialized roughly 240 projects and constructed more than 285 solar and storage assets across the United States. We still own over half of the projects we develop, reflecting our long term, owner operator mindset.
